I'm trying to grow as many veggies as I can in Calgary's wierd climate. Cold weather crops do better. Tomatoes must be under glass or forget it. It's discouraging at times. I use rain water to water mostly everything. I like simple old fashioned plants like morning glories, nasturtiums, sweet peas, roses etc. I always get blossom end rot on my zucchini and don't know how to prevent it..

Tomatoes can also be placed in a box or dark area for a few weeks to rippen. Also apparently by adding a banana or ripe tomatoe the ripening process happens faster. I'm also having issue with bloom rot on my zuchs, kinda gross, I think you just need to pick the blooms (which are edible apparently) before it starts rotting. but yes, very nice garden so far :)

Totally digging the pics you got up, those are awesome. I'm interested in the night flowers you have. Only scented at night you say?? That is very interesting. Unfortunately we will be moving soon, and our garden will be history for us. That is the biggest problem being a renter. I will still grow no matter where I live. I am a garden junkie now. Whether it be pots, raised beds, or a box on a deck/balcony, I will grow something ;o)

When we moved into this place, we got permission from the landlord to tear up a patch of his lawn for a veg garden. He agreed, and it is a lot of work. Cutting sod seriously sucks. We have an electric rototiller, and had to go over the patch many, many times with it. Then we added about 20 bags of sheep and steer manuere and worked it in. I would say with the results of our garden it was worth it in the end though.

Hi there we are in Bowness in Calgary, and have been very successful with zuchinnis in particular, so I find it strange that you are having a problem. We also do manage to get quite a few tomatoes, they do have quite the time ripening on the vine though. A friend of mine suggested using tomatoe cages and the see thru garbage bags with the draw strings. Cut the bottom of the bag and pull it down over the cage and draw the strings at the top. Try to remove in the morning and put them on at night, but because its see thru if you forget on occassion its ok. We have a variety of veg this year, and everything is coming up great despite the frost and snow in June!!
